Our Muon Imaging System creates high-resolution 3D images of shielded objects that cannot be analysed by other, more conventional techniques such as X-rays.
The system is used to identify different materials, such as uranium and concrete, based on their density. We have developed state-of-the-art imaging algorithms, which reconstruct the 3D density map within shielded objects from the path taken by the muons through our detector system.
Muography is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses naturally-occurring background radiation. This is an essential technique for imaging sensitive objects, such as radioactive waste, where destructive methods can be expensive and harmful to the operator.
Nuclear waste characterisation is the most natural, fitting application for muography as imaging is not time-critical and there is no alternative technology that can provide a similar imaging capability. With vast quantities of nuclear waste stored globally, there is a growing need to be able to characterise and monitor the waste within these containers to improve safety and reduce storage costs.
